The Aquarium run by GEOMAR | Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research presents local and exotic sea creatures in a setting that matches their natural environment as closely as possible. Visitors can marvel at these creatures in their natural habitats of the North Sea and Baltic Sea, the North Atlantic and the tropical coral reefs, all recreated in 16 pools. Modern water circulation technology and the latest academic know-how ensure that these sensitive sea creatures are kept in species-appropriate conditions.
Highlights of the aquarium
Among the aquarium’s special attractions are the large shoal of herring swimming in never-ending circles and the group of seals, which can be observed all year round from above and below the water line in their outdoor pool.
