Stadtgalerie Kiel

(Kiel Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Arts)

The museum

The Stadtgalerie Kiel is located opposite the Holstenplatz in the city centre. Its generous exhibition space, covering 1,200 m², is mainly used for contemporary art exhibitions, focusing on exhibitions of art from the Baltic Sea region, as well as regional and international contemporary art.

The galerie’s art collection includes works by 20th and 21st century regional artists, ranging from Expressionism to the present day. Special attention is given to works by graduates of the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design.

In a permanent exhibition, the Heinrich Ehmsen Foundation offers an overview of the paintings and graphic work of the Kiel-born Expressionist Heinrich Ehmsen (1886 - 1964).

The City Art Library is affiliated with the Stadtgalerie Kiel and is located in the front entrance area opposite the café. Docked to the foyer of the museum is the maritime container of the producers’ gallery PRIMA KUNST, which is run independently by students of the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design.

Highlights of the museum

The Stadtgalerie Kiel regularly presents artwork from its collection in the foyer and in the window gallery, alongside at least five rotating exhibitions on contemporary art each year.
